Web Conferencing: Using the Internet to Your Businesss Advantage

Now, I obviously don’t have to tell you about the popularity of the Internet. You would not even be reading this article if you didn’t have the “net” savvy. But you may have not noticed the more subtle ways the Internet has affected our lives. Take business trips, for example. A lot of businesses have begun to eschew business trips in favor of web conferencing, which has been made possible by the global availability of web services. Internet applications like web conferencing are starting to overhaul the way we handle global business.

Think of how a traditional business conference works. Twenty years ago, when the Internet as we know it did not exist, there were only two ways for conferencing to take place between businessmen in separate locations. One way would be to hold a telephone conference. But that had the disadvantage of being only a vocal means of communication, which meant that a great deal of information--visual data in particular--could not easily be transmitted.

The alternative method would be to get everybody to physically attend the conference. With all the participants physically present, there could be no limit to the information and ideas that could be discussed and presented. That is definitely a great advantage. But there are disadvantages as well. Such a conference entails a degree of expense and inconvenience to the participants involved or their businesses. The companies would have to incur the costs of air fares, hotel room arrangements, and sundry expenses. And valuable time would be lost in travel. This could all be compensated for if the conference ends successfully--but what if it does not?

Web conferencing has recently become a third alternative. Now people can hold a conference over the Internet. On a web conference, participants are able to view a presentation on a shared screen, which allows all of them to see the same visual information at the same time. They can also have real-time communication with each other using text chat or Voice over Internet Protocol applications. Besides verbal discussion, they are able to send each other files, images, and even videos. The advantages are enormous, and web conferencing costs a fraction of what an international conference would if it involves all the participants traveling to a single location.

The World Wide Web has been seen to revolutionize the way we communicate to each other by mail, write our journals, and find people to date. Why should it not revolutionize the business conference?
